Songfarers at Sea is a lyrical, collaboratively created work by singer-songwriters Pallavi MD, Bindhumalini, and Vedanth Bharadwaj, born out of their shared concern for ecology, stewardship, and the deep interdependence that binds all life. Through extensive research and stories gathered from people whose lives are shaped by the rhythms of land and sea, the trio crafts compositions rooted in lived experience, scientific insight, and environmental memory.

The songs emerge from real events and subtle ecological shifts — tales of impact, consequence, erosion, renewal, and the intricate cause-and-effect cycles that churn oceans, shape continents, and influence the delicate ecosystems of our planet.

Finding themselves metaphorically and musically “at sea,” the artists sift through stories, melodies, and inherited wisdom in search of cues that might illuminate a future course. The performance becomes a navigation through loss, resilience, and hope — an attempt to imagine the world they dream to sail toward, together.

Artists

Pallavi MD is a singer, composer, actor, and filmmaker, comes from a family of artists, and has a degree in Hindustani classical music from Benares University. She has won multiple awards including the META Best Actress award, the State Kempegowda award, and the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for her contribution to the field of Bhav Sangeet. She has performed jugalbandis with classical musicians, and has been a part of many fusion and world music ensembles. Pallavi is keen on collaborating with multidisciplinary artists and looks for projects that experiment with form and content.

Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy is a singer, composer. Bindhumalini constantly strives to explore avenues outside of her strict classical roots to play with the pure soul stirring power that music has. She has journeyed to various hamlets, villages, cities, and countries sharing the songs and poems of various mystic saints of India. She has directed music for feature and documentary films in Tamil, Kannada and other languages. She won the National Award and Filmfare Award as Best Singer for the songs she created and sang in the film Nathicharami. Bindhumalini has been expanding her craft, community, and repertoire through multidisciplinary collaborations

Vedanth Bharadwaj is a multi-faceted, multi-genre musician, who specialises in singing and playing the songs of saint poets from the Bhakti and Sufi traditions at music festivals in India and across the world. He has formally learnt Carnatic, Hindustani, and Western Classical music and is currently a disciple of maestro Ramamoorthy Rao.

In addition to composing music for dance and theatre productions, award-winning feature films, advertisements, documentaries, and music albums, Vedanth is the co-director of Nalandaway’s Chennai Children’s Choir (featuring young talent from economically disadvantaged backgrounds), which represented India at the Serenade Chorale Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
