Equus

Equus — from the Latin for “horse” — remains one of modern theatre’s most unsettling investigations into the human psyche. Inspired by a true incident and written by Peter Shaffer in 1973, the play begins with a horrifying crime: a seventeen-year-old boy, Alan Strang, blinds four horses in a single night. But Equus is not a whodunit — it is a whydunit, a descent into the labyrinth of Alan’s inner world.

In this bold Playhouse interpretation, the story is reframed through Carl Jung’s theory of the Shadow Self, the hidden and often disowned part of our identity that holds our deepest instincts, desires, and rage. Shadow theatre becomes the central visual language — silhouettes, shifting light, and distorted forms externalise Alan’s turmoil, turning his obsession with horses into a powerful metaphor for the primal forces we try to tame.

As psychiatrist Dr. Dysart attempts to unravel Alan’s compulsions, the play becomes a battle between societal order and raw instinct, between clinical detachment and spiritual yearning. Alan’s worship of horses — erotic, mythic, and terrifying — exposes the thin line between devotion and destruction. What emerges is a chilling portrait of how identity is shaped not only by what we show the world, but by everything we hide.
